Part of the Spiritual Transformation series, this study book covers how to really grow as a Christian. Our group took a long time over it and I think it has been the best study book I've used so far. I can't compare it to eg John Ortberg's other study books on the same sort of area, eg "The Life You've Always Wanted", since I haven't used them, but as it is, I would certainly highly recommend this to any group.

We found that the best way to use it is to do each study over 2 weeks - read the talky bit and do the first few questions, then have people do the 'homework' or challenge during the week and come back and discuss the results the following week, then finish up the study. It's easy to lead because of the number of questions and additional information - the leader doesn't have to spend hours preparing, so leading can easily be shared around.

Overall, I recommend the series as a whole to anyone, and this book, personally speaking, is the best of the series.

Review thoughts

Good points Accessibly covers spiritual disciplines. Has plenty of material, including a leader's guide and the standard written 'talky bit' at the beginning to give focus. Good challenging "homework".
Bad points Talky bit may be a bit long for some people - the leader may want to summarise parts of it or get people to read it in advance.

Our group all commented that they found this book very helpful.

Overall, I recommend the series as a whole to anyone, and this book, while not necessarily the best one in the series, maintains the standard of quality studies that should gently challenge any group.

Review thoughts

Good points As with all the Willow Creek Pursuing Spiritual Transformation series, there's a written talk at the beginning of each study, which helps focus the group and give something to start from. There is challenging 'homework' to do, and enough study questions to be able to pick and choose what is appropriate to the group. There is also a leader's guide at the back of every book which helps to clarify the point of the study, provide some extra questions, and some more thoughts.
Bad points First-timers to these kinds of study may find the amount in each study rather overwhelming. Also the written 'talky bit' does have some Americanisms which occasionally needed explaining! The 'talky bit' may also be a bit too long at times, and the leader may want to summarise or get people to read it in advance.
