The Bible says that if you give, God will so give to you that you will be able to give even more. Your giving capacity is intended to grow. To those outside the Church God’s economy seems stupid. God is saying the way to prosper is to give your money away. Giving is very good for you.
Here we present a special set of teachings which Malcolm Widdecombe gave at a worldwide conference of Anglican clergy, for you to download and enjoy.
Giving Is Good For You - What it means in practice
If Christians gave a tenth, see how effective their Church would be. If ten Christians gave a tenth of their salary they could afford to keep their pastor at the same standard that they themselves enjoy. 20 Christians giving a tenth could support a pastor and run a big church building keeping the heating on all week in the winter. 30 Christians giving a tenth could not only care for their pastor and run a big church building, but they could also support completely one missionary. Now if they achieve this by giving a tenth, imagine how much more they would achieve if they gave freewill offerings over and above their tenth. The mind boggles at what they would do as God increased their giving capacity. And remember they would not go short themselves, because God says giving does you good.
But does it really work? Yes, it does. We are not the only church to prove that giving is good for you. But we can speak from present experience. The church was due to close in 1964 due to poor finances and low attendances. The evening congregation seldom topped 40. We started to give to missionary work outside our own parochial area. In 1965 £187 was given away. The giving increased each year. In 1969 £1,138 was given away. In 1972 over £6,000. In 1974, our octo-centenary year, over £13,000. 1985, over £58,000 was given away. In 1993 I did some sums and saw that if we gave £93,000 away that year
we would in fact have given £1 million away since we had been in fellowship together (Dec. 1963). That year God enabled us to give £97,000 away. We then had a think about the second million. We decided that with inflation ten years would probably do it. In fact we gave away the second million by Easter 2002. We are now looking for the third million! Today something like 300 plus people pass through the church on a Sunday, a number of church members are applying for full-time service, others are already in the ministry or overseas. Giving away has done us good. God intends it that way. GIVING IS GOOD FOR YOU.
