Caroline Thomas is working with Iris Ministries, an organisation working with widows, orphans and the poor in many countries of the world.

Whilst training with Iris in Mozambique in 2008, Caroline felt strongly called by God to set up a baby house for abandoned babies in Madagascar (where she had previously worked as a midwife in 2006). It was a life changing experience for her.

In August 2010 Caroline set up the first Iris base in Madagascar and Iris Ministries is now a registered NGO in the country. The work is now getting established and they are beginning to take in abandoned children, plus staff to care for them as house parents.

Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world. The poorest live on the streets and give birth on the pavements. Babies are left to die in skips and on rubbish dumps. Children are abandoned on the streets and those who survive frequently have no choice but to turn to crime to support themselves.

Update September 2010

• There is now a team of four: Caroline, Rachel, Patty and Julio.
• There are currently up to 70 children coming to eat lunch every weekday in a lunchtime feeding programme. These are either street children or children from very poor families who cannot afford to feed their children properly.
• They are starting to prepare to take in children during the coming months.
• Money has been donated /raised to purchase land but, of course, a suitable building will have to be constructed and equipped.
