The new pulpit fall

In October 2009 a small banner was added to the pulpit. Voirrey Guy shares the story behind it, and the effect she hopes it will have:

Pulpit Fall designThis design came from a sculpture by Jonathan Hemingray. As I stitched, I realised that God was directing every idea I had and every part of the design had a purpose and a meaning: a communication to us as the people of God as well as individuals.

I struggled for ages with making it just white. But the words holiness then purity kept coming into my mind. I believe that is to remind us that we have a Holy God who we should not treat casually. Equally, we are a holy people and the word purity reminds us to keep ourselves in the world but not of it. As I got closer to finishing, I noticed it had a bridal quality and I believe that this reinforces that we are the pure Bride of Christ.

  • The circle represents God the Father;
  • the cross, God the Son;
  • and the flame, God the Holy Spirit as a purifying flame or cleansing water.

The break in the circle is the path to the cross.

New church office arrangements

Vicar Malcolm Widdecombe officially retired on May 31st.

As we continue to work as a church body during the vacancy period, church administrator Rose Taylor will be working for the church 3½ days per week, including 3 days in the office (most likely Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.)

Rose will be the centre of everything that happens at Pip n Jay. If you need to use the church for a meeting, practice or social event, you MUST check with Rose first. If any event is changed, again notify Rose.

To contact the church office, email Rose Taylor - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it - or call 0117 929 3386.

LLMs or Lay Readers - who are they?

Rob Hook writes:

In any church it is the Vicar or ordained minister who is responsible to the Bishop of that Diocese for the effective pastoring and leading of the congregation. In a vacancy (where there is no vicar or priest in charge) these responsibilities rest with the Church Wardens and the PCC.

In both cases there is typically a team of people who support the vicar or Wardens in preaching, teaching and leading services called Licensed Lay Ministers. Historically they were called Lay Readers but the church has realised that these individuals can take on much of the work of an ordained minister. The term Lay does not refer to their work ethic but it means “uninitiated” as they are not ordained. That does not make them any less worthy! The LLMs go through a rigorous selection process to approve their vocational calling, are approved by their churches PCC and undergo at least two years of training. The list of Pip ‘n’ Jay LLMs is as follows:

Adrian Bright, Rob Hook, Sheila McKay, Steve Sharples, Jill Kells, Dave Matthews, Chris Perkins, Pat Willson
(+ Andy Hiscox – in training, due to be licensed in 2010)

If you have any comments on the running of the services please mention it to one of them. We meet regularly to review how we worship and how we move forward as a fellowship.

What's for families at Pip n Jay?

If you have children, we have the Sunday Club to look after them and encourage them to find a faith of their own. That's in the weeks when we don't have an All Age worship service to join in together.

Midweek, Little Pips is our group for mothers and toddlers, which meets every few weeks - see our What's On guide for dates.

And if you fancy a good time away together, why not think of booking in for our summer house party at Brunel Manor?

There's lots more to discover every Sunday in church - come and see us there!

Substance for students

Being good is often misunderstood as just avoiding being bad! Instead of being a clear influence for Goodness, followers of Jesus are often associated more with not drinking until we’re blind, not having sex and not taking drugs. We see goodness more as healing the sick, looking for opportunities to serve, and seeing poor and the broken restored! The question for our student community is... how can we actually be a GOOD people?
