Discipleship is following Jesus - it's great but challenging. In him we can experience life to the full, a life without limits but as we grow we realise that this is uncovered in a reckless selflessness, by choosing to lose to control so we can find freedom. A life of faith is found as we face our fears and let Jesus overcome them.
Jesus transformed the world - not by having massive healing events and a cracking band, but by gathering a small group of people who were bought into who he was and what he stood for. They worked out together what it meant “to be found in Christ”, and those followers took Jesus to the known world. The disciples were a fantastic small group, they spent a great deal of time with Jesus, getting to know each other and spreading the “Good news” of the Kingdom with words and actions!
If we want to be dynamic followers as well, we need to be part of a dynamic community. It is in the context of committed relationships that we best support each other and, as we let that love shape who we are, we understand how much God loves us. Jesus’ ways are often counter-cultural, so if we are to follow him we might challenge the status-quo. This may be hard but it is also good, and it’s why we need support and encouragement from each other!
At Pip n Jay we see small groups as the place we are committed to do this. A vibrant community will be organised around meeting God, each other and people who are searching. A balance of these three things is important as we seek to live “life to the full”. Whilst this was not Jesus’ only model for discipleship, it was his primary one. We want to value the things he values, and live like he lived!
How to join in
Small groups are our church's main way of following Jesus. Another is our annual discipleship course, Year Team.
